Students Against Substance Abuse @ East Los Angeles College

Mission

The mission statement of SASA is to promote awareness of drug abuse, drug addiction and related issues and to encourage treatment. The club endeavors to do this by sponsoring private and public forums and community outreach.
Description

"Who are we"?
We are students and Alumni of East Los Angeles College. Some of us have gone through the gauntlet of substance abuse, yet managed to survive the horrors of this horrible disease. The resources needed for most of our work come from fundraisers, although
sometimes we find it necessary to seek contributions. We participate in community outreach, we assist in the Midnight Mission during the Holidays, host and sponsor events like Red ribbon Week, we serve our communities proudly.
We attend the California Association of Alcohol and Drug Educators' (CAADE) annual conference, we also hold our own informative Annual Forum. These forums that SASA hosts are are intended to bring about awareness in our college as well as in our surrounding communities.

"We are people who know about substance abuse/chemical dependency and the weight that it drags with it. The weight that could drag even the most prominent of citizens down to losing everything from families, jobs, health, even life!

We care about you and we are here for you"! ♥♥♥

General Information

"For Students By Students"
Envisioned and founded by Dr. Carlton Blanton in 1996 at East Los Angeles College. To encourage the student body to enhance their education by having a basis for learning and helping others. The students of the psychology department knew there was still a missing piece to the greater picture; that piece was an adjunct to the classroom.

SASA incorporated what we learn in the classroom and we utilize this as a tool for taking the next big step in life. This organization focuses on today's "at-risk" youth, focusing in Primary, Secondary, and Tertiary Preventions.
Our purpose is to educate others on the facs of substance abuse and its negative consequences. Intervention plays a key role in the work we do; we have panels that go to area schools and rehab centers. In time we hope to be more involved in various communities' schools and promote drug education and awareness to both youth and parents as well.

We are a campus chartered club here in East Los Angeles College. We are under the advisement of the Psychology Department; Dr Blanton, Dr. Taback, and Dr. Vartanian.

We thank you Doctors' for enabling us to gain more knowledge in this field of Drug and Addiction Studies. '
